South Pittsburg is a small-town home to 3,000 residents located thirty minutes outside of Chattanooga, TN. Our studio worked with a resident and was tasked with proposing a community-oriented addition to his existing bar. Adjacent to the bar, the new building would include a microbrewery on the lower floor and formal dining on the upper. A challenge our studio faced during this project was understanding the programming of an operational restaurant. Working with the local Knoxville firm R2R Studio, the challenge was overcome after visiting one of their restaurants under construction. After speaking to their team, we gained insight into the firm’s design and implementation process for commercial restaurants. Considerations for the small-town restaurant were its connection with South Pittsburg’s historical significance and adjacent buildings, specifically the main drag one block from the site.
